Power goes out. The lift stops. The question everyone asks next is whether it needs someone to come out and fix it.
Usually not. The lift is built to recover on its own.
What happens when power comes back
If power is lost during the day or overnight, the lift does not need rescuing. When power is restored, the doors close automatically and the lift begins a re-reference cycle by itself.
It travels to the base floor and resets there. Once it is back at base level, it is ready to use normally.
What you will see
- The Up and Down lights flash while the lift is re-referencing.
- The lift moves at about 25% of normal travel speed during the cycle. That is deliberate, not a fault.
- The lift comes to rest at the base floor level.
- When the flashing stops, normal operation is available again.
What not to do
Let the cycle finish. Don't press buttons repeatedly while it is re-referencing, and don't open doors to check on it - opening a door breaks the safety circuit and stops the lift moving.
If it doesn't come back
Work through these in order:
- Are the green lights on, and are all doors closed correctly? If yes, the lift should move.
- If not, open and close the door at the current floor to make sure the switch has fully activated.
- Are the emergency stop lights flashing? If so, make sure every stop button has been released, then press the reset button on the control panel.
A note on the emergency stop: it is there because someone pressed it for a reason. Before resetting, a supervisor or manager should confirm why it was pressed.
